ACT, White Mountain Stars Ready to Do Battle
/A little extra will be on the line this Saturday, August 4 when the ACT Late Model Tour heads to N. Woodstock, NH’s White Mountain Motorsports Park. The Autosaver Group 150 will see the stars of ACT take on the weekly standouts of the ¼-mile bullring in the quest to be the next ACT winner.
Saturday’s event will count towards both the ACT and White Mountain championships. Regional household names such as Scott Payea, Eddie MacDonald, and Jimmy Hebert will take on Quinny Welch, Stacy Cahoon, Stephen Donahue, and others who call the White Mountains their racing home. As such, one of the biggest fields of the year is expected, potentially creating a battle just to get in the main event.
Everyone who makes the show will be racing for more than just the winner’s trophy and check. The victor in the Autosaver Group 150 will also become eligible for a provisional starting spot in the track’s $10,000-to-win Napa Blue & Gold 250 on Sunday, September 16. With the chance to parlay a win on Saturday into an even bigger payday, the stakes will be high for many teams.
The 150-lap shootout is also another opportunity to shake up the chase for the 2018 ACT title. Defending champion Payea of Colchester, VT continues to show the way. The veteran slightly expanded his lead over Rowley, MA’s MacDonald last time out and currently holds a 48-point cushion. Willamstown, VT’s Hebert took a large chunk out of his own deficit by earning maximum points at Speedway 51, but still sits 50 behind Payea with four events remaining.
Those behind the top-3 know they need to win races to have a shot at the title. Lebanon, NH’s Rich Dubeau and Groveton, NH’s Corey Mason are fourth and fifth in the standings, and both are looking for their first ACT victory. Getting it done on Saturday could be the tonic to revive their title hopes. Bryan Mason, Chip Grenier, and top rookie Dylan Payea will also be looking for a breakthrough ACT win.
But no one should count out the White Mountain contingent. Groveton, NH’s Welch is a nine-time track champion, meaning he is a threat every time he rolls onto the track. St. Johnsbury, VT’s Cahoon and Graniteville, VT’s Donahue have both visited Victory Lane on multiple occasions this year. Oren Remick is another former track champion who has found success in ACT events.
The battle to be King of the White Mountains begins with qualifying at 6:00pm on Saturday, August 4. The track’s Tiger Sportsmen, Strictly Minis, Dwarf Cars, and Kids Trucks will join the ACT and White Mountain Late Models on the card. The pits open at 12:00 noon and the front gates open at 3:00pm. Admission is $20 for adults and $2 for kids age 11 and under.
